What is Voice Writing or Voice Stenography?
Although new to Iowa, voice writing has been around since the mid-1940s. Today, voice writing is a recognized standard accepted by the National Verbatim Reporters Association and permitted in the vast majority of U.S. jurisdictions. It is now available in 46 states.
Voice writing—also called voice stenography—is a modern method of court reporting. Instead of using a traditional steno machine, I capture the record by speaking into a specialized microphone inside a sound-dampening mask. The microphone picks up my voice clearly while the mask keeps it quiet and unobtrusive, so I’m not speaking loudly or interrupting the proceeding. I’m trained to remain professional and low-profile, and most people forget I’m using voice writing within minutes. The goal is the same as traditional stenography: an accurate, reliable record, and a clean, dependable transcript.
